Gardening Tips for the month of JANUARY – Mid Winter

Feed the birds
Plant hellebore’s for seasonal colour
Prune your shrubs – Reshape or reducing
Prune Fruit Trees
Prune ornamental trees
Dig over vegetable beds and add manure ready for the coming season
Plant scented Daphne’s
Watch out for overwintering pests
Prepare a bean trench – Dig out and fill with compost bin contents
Prepare the greenhouse for the upcoming seed sowings
Check any Hardwood cuttings in the soil – Make sure they have not been by the frosts
Carry on taking hardwood cuttings
Winter wash your fruit trees
Winter prune wisteria shoots
Check ant plants in containers outside – Make sure the drainage holes are not blocked, avoids pots cracking
Regular dead heading of indoor flowering plants
Roses can be lifted and replanted if necessary

Camellia buds are vulnerable to frosts – Cover with fleece, if forecast
Inspect your overwintering dahlia tubers – Keep them dry – Throw out anything soft or rotten
